The Rain Shoe

When my English lecturer said the word 'brogues' I thought she added an 's' to the Irish accent. Of course I didn't know.

Before that enlightening essay class, I had no idea about brogues. But I loved the word 'brogue'. By the way, I read on the Wikipedia that  according to a famous false etymology, the word stems from the supposed perception that the Irish spoke English so peculiarly that it was as if they did so "with a shoe in their mouths"!

Anyway, post essay class, I came to know that the shoes were made for men to walk in the countryside where there was possibility to find water and mud. The shoes originated in Scotland and Ireland and were made using untanned hide. The perforations were made for water to drain from the shoes in case it was raining or if there was water on the streets.

It is a bit difficult to find good brogues in India, but someone who wants to find them will find them. I love them. Though there have been people who have told me they are masculine. Well, they can forever hold their peace.

Have you liked my Facebook page yet.

  1. Rupa, you have inspired me to try so many trends that I was wary of. Guess, brogues is next on the list! :) The combination looks great! :) BTW, you have given me a good option for rain shoes especially in Bangalore where it rains quite a lot... :)

You look better than the models behind in the poster! :)

  3. I never hear about brogues, but sounds interesting.
Your combination is great, I like this kind of style. Easy and stylish. The dress has a beautiful color and a trench is always a good choice. Rain shoes in Germany too :)

  26. Brogues is a fun word to say. And so what if they're "masculine," screw notions of outdate gender roels. You can work them!
